Joslin Memorial Tombstone

Two weeks ago we talked about our ancestor Joseph Joslin Jr.'s revolutionary War journal. Today I would like to tell you about his grandfather Israel Joslin.

Israel's tombstone is located in the Old East Thompson Cemetery, Thompson ,Ct  If you have not been to this cemetery it is worth a drive out there. It is located along a country road with big old trees and stone walls and lots of interesting tombstones that belong to our ancestors.

One of my favorite tombstones in this cemetery is titled "Joslin Memorial"  and tells the life story of Israel Joslin and his wife Sarah Bailey

I do not know when this tombstone was erected but I am certain it was not when Israel and Sarah died in the 1700's. I suspect an enthusiastic genealogist erected this tombstone sometime in this century! The story on the stone is fascinating.

Israel and his wife Sarah lived in rural Arundel, Maine in 1723. This area of Maine was known as Cape Porpoise. During the Indian Wars of the early 1700's Sarah's father was killed. The couple fled back to their old home in Newbury, Ma but soon relocated to the frontier settlement of Killingly, Ct. Israel died in 1761 and Sarah died in 1771.
