Today we go back over 300 years to our ancestor Elisha Smith. Elisha was the grandson of John Smith (The Miller). John Smith was one of the original co-founders of Rhode Island with Roger Williams.
The Smith-Appleby House in Smithfield, RI was built by our ancestor Elisha Smith c. 1696. When Elisha built his home it was only one small room with a loft.
One whole wall was made of local limestone where the fireplace for heating and cooking was placed. This type of architecture is known as a Stone-ender and is unique to Rhode Island! Today the the Smith-Applyby house looks much different than it did more than 300 years ago with all of the additions that have been made.
Elisha was a farmer who eventually acquired over 700 of acres of land around his home. The land did pass down through the Smith family but only to the boys. We are descended from Elisha's oldest daughter Sarah. In 1784 one of the Smith descendants married an Appleby resulting in the museums current name of The Smith-Appleby House.
